Furosemide
Indications/Uses
Treatment of edema associated w/ heart failure including pulmonary edema, renal & hepatic disorders. Also used in the treatment of HTN.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/IV Adult Initially, 20-40 mg. Childn 0.5-1.5 mg/kg/day. Max: 20 mg/day.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides. Anuria, electrolyte deficiency, pre-comatose states associated w/ liver cirrhosis.
Special Precautions
Slow IV administration at a rate of 4 mg/min. Patients w/ prostatic hypertrophy, impairment of micturition, electrolyte deficiency or preexisting metabolic alkalosis. Correct hypotension or hypovolemia before commencing therapy. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, malaise, GI upset, raised serum Ca levels, tetany, allergic reactions (discontinue), acute pancreatitis, reversible hearing loss, transient rise in creatinine & urea levels, hyperuricemia, bone marrow depression, clinical gout, reduced mental alertness.
